Are dental x-rays safe for children? Does my child need them?

Yes, dental x-rays are safe for children. Modern digital x-rays use a very low dose of radiation and let us see problems hidden between teeth or below the gumline that an exam alone can't catch. We take them only when needed — typically every six to twelve months depending on your child's cavity risk.
X-rays are one of the most valuable tools we have for protecting your child's teeth, and with today's technology they're also very low-risk. We use digital x-rays, which cut the radiation dose dramatically compared with the older film type, and your child is shielded throughout. The exposure from a set of dental x-rays is genuinely small — comparable to the natural background radiation everyone encounters over a short period in ordinary daily life, and far less than many parents imagine.
Why do we take them at all? Because a great deal of dental trouble hides exactly where the eye can't reach. Cavities frequently start between teeth that touch, where they're invisible during a normal exam until they've grown large. Problems can develop below the gumline or at the roots. And x-rays let us see adult teeth developing under the surface, so we can spot issues like missing, extra, or poorly positioned teeth early. Catching all of this while it's small and simple to fix — instead of after it causes pain — is precisely what x-rays make possible.
How often your child needs them depends on your child, not a rigid calendar. For most children we take them roughly every six to twelve months, but we base the interval on cavity risk: a child who tends to get cavities, or who has teeth close together where decay is easy to miss, may need them a bit more often, while a child with strong, healthy, well-spaced teeth may need them less frequently. We follow the principle of taking only what's necessary, only when the information will genuinely benefit your child's care — never routinely "just because."
Different types serve different purposes. Bitewing x-rays check for cavities between the back teeth; a panoramic image gives a broad view of all the teeth, the jaws, and developing adult teeth, which is especially useful as your child grows and as we watch orthodontic timing. We'll only recommend the views that answer a real question about your child's mouth.
If you ever have questions or concerns about a recommended x-ray — why it's needed, how often, or the safety measures we take — please just ask. We're always glad to explain our reasoning, and we hold your child's safety to the same standard we'd want for our own. The goal is simple: the least radiation necessary to keep your child's teeth healthy and catch problems early.
