Is Invisalign a good option for my teen?

For many teens, yes. Clear aligners are nearly invisible, comfortable, and removable for eating and brushing — a big plus for self-conscious teenagers. The catch is consistency: they must be worn 20–22 hours a day. For a responsible, motivated teen with a suitable case, they work beautifully.
Clear aligners have become a popular choice for teenagers, and for good reasons that go beyond looks. The most obvious is that they're nearly invisible — a teen can straighten their smile without a mouth full of metal, which is often the single deciding factor for self-conscious adolescents who dread the idea of visible braces. For a teen worried about photos, social situations, or simply how they look day to day, that can make all the difference in their willingness to pursue treatment at all.
The removability is a genuine practical advantage too. Because the trays come out for eating, your teen can enjoy any food without the restrictions braces impose — no giving up popcorn, apples, or gum for a year or more. And because they come out for brushing and flossing, keeping teeth and gums healthy during treatment is far easier than working around brackets and wires, where plaque tends to build up and can leave marks on the teeth. Aligners are also smooth and comfortable, with none of the cheek and lip irritation brackets can cause, and no emergency visits for broken brackets or poking wires.
The one real requirement — and it's a big one — is discipline. Aligners only move teeth when they're being worn, which means your teen needs to keep them in 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat and clean their teeth. A teen who forgets, or who leaves them out through lunch and after-school snacks, will slow their progress or stall it entirely. Aligners made for teens often include helpful features like indicators that show whether they're being worn enough, but success still ultimately comes down to consistent wear. This is why aligners suit a motivated, responsible teen far better than one who is younger, forgetful, or reluctant.
It's also worth knowing that aligners handle many teen cases beautifully but aren't ideal for every situation — very complex bite or alignment problems are sometimes treated more predictably with braces. The only way to know whether your teen is a good candidate is a proper evaluation.
At a consultation, Dr. Lee Wu, our board-certified orthodontist, will assess whether your teen's specific case is well suited to clear aligners, and he'll be honest with you if braces would actually serve them better — we'd rather give you the right recommendation than the trendy one. If you'd like to discuss cost or how your out-of-network orthodontic benefits might apply, give us a call and we'll help you understand your options.
