What is nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") and is it safe for kids?

Reviewed by Dr. Navreet Sidhu, DDS · Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist · July 2026

Nitrous oxide, or "laughing gas," is a mild sedative your child breathes through a small nose mask to feel calm and relaxed during treatment. It's one of the safest and most widely used sedation options in pediatric dentistry — your child stays awake, and its effects wear off within minutes of removing the mask.

Nitrous oxide, widely known as "laughing gas," is a gentle, time-tested way to help children relax in the dental chair, and it has been used safely in dentistry for generations. Your child breathes a carefully controlled mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small, often lightly flavored mask that rests over the nose. Within just a few minutes, most children feel calm, a little floaty or tingly, and noticeably less bothered by the sights and sounds around them. Despite the nickname, it doesn't make children laugh uncontrollably — it simply eases anxiety and helps them feel comfortable.

What makes nitrous oxide so useful is how light and controllable it is. Your child stays fully awake and able to respond to us, breathe on their own, and follow simple directions throughout — it isn't "being put to sleep." We can adjust the level moment to moment, increasing it slightly if a child needs a bit more help relaxing and easing off as we finish. It simply takes the edge off nervousness and can make time seem to pass quickly, which is perfect for a child who just needs help staying calm and still during a filling or a thorough cleaning. It's well suited to mild-to-moderate anxiety.

It's also remarkably safe, with a long track record and very few side effects. The most common is mild nausea in a small number of children, which we minimize by keeping the dose appropriate and having your child avoid a heavy meal right before. Because it's so gentle, it's one of the most widely used sedation options in all of pediatric dentistry.

The biggest practical advantage is how quickly it clears. Once the treatment is done and we remove the nitrous, your child breathes plain oxygen for a few minutes, and the effects wear off almost entirely and very fast — there's no lingering grogginess like with deeper sedation. This means most children feel completely back to normal by the time they leave our office, and in most cases can return to school or their usual activities the same day. There's no long recovery period to plan around.

For children whose needs go beyond what nitrous can provide — those with more significant anxiety, special healthcare needs, or extensive treatment required — we have deeper options available, including in-office IV sedation with dedicated anesthesia specialists on hand. But for a great many children, gentle nitrous oxide is all that's needed to make a visit calm and comfortable. We'll always recommend the lightest approach that will work for your child, and we're glad to answer any questions you have about it.
